We Are No Longer Slaves To Fear

The Spirit you received does not make you slaves, so that you live in fear again; rather, the Spirit you received brought about your adoption to sonship.[a] And by him we cry, “Abba,[b] Father.” (Romans 8:15)

Fear and its close relative, anxiety, always work hand in hand and have been the reason why so many people have failed to reach their full potential. Fear always sees a threat. Anxiety imagines one. Fear was rightly defined as false evidence appearing real. We tend to be afraid of so many things. Fear of failure. Fear that we will inherit a hereditary disease. Fear that the worse could happen. Fear that we will lose our job. Fear that we will not amount to anything in life. And the list goes on and on. Humanity appears to be afraid of almost everything today.

Fear causes stress and brings along many ailments. Tailor Clark in a Slate article found that stress related ailment costs the nation USD$300 billion every year in medical bills and lost productivity, while our usage of sedative drugs keeps skyrocketing; just between 1997 and 2004, Americans more than doubled their spending on anti-anxiety medication like Xanax and Valium, from $900 million to $2.1 billion.

Uncertainty has reached its peak and we are all so fearful of what would happen next. How could fear, anxiety and stress have climbed to such high levels in our world today? Cars are built to more safe than ever. We regulate food and water and electricity. While we still have the issue of gang violence, we don't appear to live under imminent danger of attack. Yet if fear and worrying were Olympic events, we would win gold medal!

The issue of fear is not new. It has its root in the ancient biblical times. This was the situation in the time of the Children of Israel as described in the book of Joshua. Joshua had not only inherited a rebellious group from His forerunner, Moses, but he too was not sure of the enemies that lay ahead in the lands that were yet to be conquered on their way to the promised land of Canaan. So God had to literally remind him: “Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.”” (Joshua 1:9).

We have a Father and His Spirit in us eliminate the spirit of fear

The devil is the author of fear and is directly behind the spirit of fear. Fear presents what is not real to us and makes it look like it is real. The devil, the father of all liars (John 8:44), toils on figments of imagination and throws little seeds of doubts and unbelief into it. The devil is “like” a roaring lion (1 Peter 5:8 NIV) – he is not the Lion of the tribe of Judah. The devil starts the antics of fear with the subtle question “what if?” But we must stand our ground with unwavering assurance that God is with us. Although we live in a world full of uncertainty, we believe in a God that is full of certainty and assurance – the very one that can do the impossible. And when we believe, the Holy Spirit is released unto our hearts.

But as we recognize our place of power and authority it God our Father, we can arise in confidence. We are sons and daughters of the living God. We are have a God who can do all things. Why should we be afraid. God is the creator of all things, the sovereign and omnipotent. And we have His spirit at work in us even today. For we did not receive the spirit to bring us back into the bondage of fear, anxiety, stress and worry. We have the Spirit that assures that we have Abba Father with us and with the power of the Holy Spirit we can overcome fear.

"For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind." (2 Timothy 1:7 NKJV)

And is there any goals you have set for yourself that you are afraid you might fail them?

Don't give up. Don't let fear get the better of you. You can dream again. No matter your age, gender, origin, color or race, you can begin again. It's possible that fear has folded you up like pretzels and you're no longer motivated to do anything. And to make matters worse, all your mates that you started out together with have accomplished all of their goals.

We totally understand you. Don't let the fear of failure cripple you. This space is not enough to tell you of how many times we ourselves have failed. But we learnt a very important secret in the midst of our failures. Here is what we learnt: It is only those that didn't attempt anything in the first case that failed. That you made an attempt at something already shows you are way above average. In fact, you are in the list of about 20% of people in the world who are making effort and leaving their comfort zone. 80% of the world population is settling in their comfort zone.

So look back at the process. Learn from it. Start again. This time around more intelligently. Forgive yourself. Forgive other people who may have crossed you. Begin again. This time more intelligently.

We have created "No Longer A Slave To Fear" collection at Govibly to carry on this message. Live without fear. Reach the fullness of what God has called you to be. We celebrate you ahead.
